Lodgepole Pine is a very flexible wood that was once used
by the inland native people to build teepees and
poles for construction of lodges, hence its name. It grows 30 to 35 meters
high and lives up to 200 years.
In the spring, long ribbons of the sugar-rich inner bark were stripped off
to eat. This inner bark could be stored
or mashed to make bread. Needles were used to make tea and the pitch was
used as a base for medicines to
treat rheumatic pain, aches and soreness in muscles and joints, and sore
throats. The tree provides food for small
mammals which feed on the inner bark. Its wood is soft to moderately hard
and light yellow in color.
An important source of timber, pine is often used in construction for
plywood, paneling, furniture, doors,
windows, and after treatment with preservatives, for railway ties, fence
posts, and utility poles. Pine is made
into stimulating oils with antiseptic properties. It has a fresh, sharp
aroma and is an effective deodorant and air
freshener.
It is recommended that an application of a good quality exterior finish be
applied to all of our pine products.
This can be either a clear finish to retain the natural look or a solid or
semi-transparent finish to modify it to a
preferred color tone for architectural purposes. We’ve chosen to use
Lodgepole Pine for our garden
sheds, entertainment centers, cottages, and cabins because of its
flexibility, durability, and appearance.
